4/4: Final Four, Baseball, UConn Women, etc.

Greetings... Let me go ahead and apologize for the lack of content over the weekend.... internet access was the culprit, but I'm still alive and kicking... let's get to the action...

  • The UConn Women... lose!?... Obviously, this is the only story in WCBB that would lead this blog, and it benefits from a lack of "big" news except for the men's title game (coming later), but Maya Moore's 36 points wasn't enough to overcome Notre Dame, and the 3-peat won't happen... It's really impressive what they've done, but all credit to ND who seemed to have beaten up on them, shooting 52% and dominating the glass 32-24...
  • Missouri has a new basketball coach... they've hired Miami's Frank Haith... kind of a precarious hire with how sketchy Haith's status at Miami has been... he hasn't recruited a whole lot of talent to the U, but they've been perimeter attack oriented, and that's at least similar to Mike Anderson...
  • NBA Check - San Antonio ends their historic 6-game slide with a 114-97 win over Phoenix... George Hill actually led the way with 29... put an asterisk by the losing streak just b/c of injury, but they need wins to keep the 1 seed... The Lakers finally lost a game... 95-90 to Denver, at home, to fall short of 10 straight wins... Kobe finished with 28, but shot just 10-27, and Denver got 22 from Gallinari (who somehow shot only 5-11 from the line)... Shaq came back for Boston... and then immediately got hurt again? This time a calf injury... doesn't seem serious, but wow... the Knicks clinch a playoff spot with a win over Cleveland... first time in 7 years for NY... Toronto knocks off Orlando to end a 6-game slide... 24 for DeRozan, and 17 boards from my man Reggie Evans... Washington won (another!) road game... defies all logic... and of course, The Hawks go down in Houston 114-109... a 32-18 3rd quarter was their undoing... Joe Johnson had 25, but his counterpart Kevin Martin had 35, and all 5 Houston starters had double-digits...
Baseball...
  • The Braves rout Washington 11-2... Hudson threw 7 dominant innings (allowing just 3 hits and 1 ER), and Brian McCann continues to rake going 3 for 5 with 4 RBI... 2 of 3 on the road against an opponent that seems to have your number is a nice start...
  • Evan Longoria hits the 15-day DL... not the start he would've liked I'm sure... but those "strain in your side" things seem to linger for baseball guys...
  • Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz have BOTH homered in the Rangers' first 3 games... for the first time in MLB history, teammates have done this, and that's pretty crazy...
  • Pitching Line of the Day - Jaime Garcia - CG, 4 hits, 0 ER, 9 Ks, and a dominant shutout performance from the 2nd year guy...
  • Batting Line of the Day - Ryan Hanigan - 4 for 4, 2 HR, 4 RBI... the young Reds catcher continues the torrid production from that position in that lineup... the kid can hit
What to watch for...
  • College Hoops National Title Game - Butler vs. UConn - Tip-off @ 9:23 PM - Hmm... Butler suffocated the VCU offense on Saturday, and they've consistently been the best defensive team in the tournament... there is something to be said for that... also, they have Mack, Nored, and Vanzant to throw at Kemba, and those are all vets... the key to the game is Matt Howard... he's gotta go off here for Butler to have a realistic shot... on the UConn side, they've gotten stellar support production from Napier (on Saturday), Lamb, etc. and it can't just be the Kemba show... gun to my head, I'll take UConn, but I think Butler's style of play is something I really enjoy...
  • Braves @ Brewers - Beachy vs. Narveson - SportSouth 2:10 - Another day game... get a chance to see Beachy, and he'll be key to the Braves success...
  • Twins @ Yankees - Baker vs. Nova - ESPN 7:05 - Ivan Nova is probably the key to the entire Yankees season... that seems crazy, but it's true...
Enjoy..
