3/13: The Field Nearly Set...

Greetings all... short on time this morning, so forgive the brevity...
  • UConn wins 5 games in 5 days to win the Big East... Kemba Walker once again led the way with 19 points for the Huskies, but the Final was a balanced effort... obviously the most impressive thing is winning 5 days in a row (first time ever), and that'll be the legacy...
  • Kansas takes the Big 12... 85-73 over Texas, and there was too much size and too much depth for the Jayhawks... There seems to be a general consensus that Kansas and Ohio State are the best 2 teams in the land and yesterday supported that for Kansas...
  • San Diego State gets revenge... the Aztecs win the Mountain West title with an 18-point blowout over BYU... Jimmer got his 30, but needed 25 shots to do it, and SDSU exposed BYU a bit without Davies... as the committee deliberates, it's going to be interesting to see how much they take BYU's performance post-Davies into account...
  • Washington wins the Pac-10... Isaiah Thomas hit an "onions!"-type buzzer-beater in OT to take down Arizona... Washington has generally underperformed this year, but they seem capable of beating anyone on a given night... it's a bit of Jekyll and Hyde... man, I love Derrick Williams for Zona though...
More college to get to... but I'll try and cover it a bit in What to Watch for... Elsewhere...
  • NBA Check - Miami beasts Memphis... 118-85 and I'm not sure it was that close... it was basically an annihilation from the jump and Wade led the way with 29... Jeff Teague is alive and well... 24 points in a rare start leading ATL to an improbable win over Portland sans Al Horford... Another example of the inexplicable burial of his minutes prior... Chris Paul!... That's what I was yelling as the Hornets boxscore ran across the bottom line... 33 points... 15 dimes... and reassurance that he isn't dead... welcome back, CP3... and LA knocks off Dallas 96-91 behind 22 and 15 from Andrew Bynum... Kobe's extra shooting practice didn't pay off in the short term (6 of 20 FG)...
  • Johan Santana will likely not pitch in 2011... kind of devastating for the Mets, who apparently "weren't expecting him"... but at any rate, that's not a play0ff-caliber rotation without a healthy Santana...
  • Apparently it's a legitimate story about Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith's salary hitting $1 and under... I don't particularly care about this, but it's a good thing that their claims were legit...
What to watch for on Sunday...
  • March Madness Selection Show - 7:00 on CBS or ESPN - The Bracket is revealed... must-see TV followed by printers everywhere working overtime...
  • Fab Five Documentary - 9:00 ESPN - Yes, I'm putting this over the games that take place on Sunday... yes, I'm a homer... but I couldn't be more fired up about this...
  • ACC Final - #5 Duke vs. #7 North Carolina - 1:00 ESPN - The rivalry of all rivalries in college hoops takes the court... there's less sting in this one than usual simply because I'm not sure the end-goal for these 2 teams is a conference tourney title, but it's still a great matchup...
  • Big 10 Final - Penn State vs. #1 Ohio State - 3:30 CBS - Impressive run by Penn State to make it here... but good night Nittany Lions...
  • SEC Final - #16 Kentucky vs. #12 Florida - 1:00 ABC - A quietly awesome matchup actually... Florida is very hot right now, and Kentucky has as much talent as anyone... the Lamb injury for Kentucky could be crucial though...
  • A-10 Final - Dayton vs. Richmond - 1:00 CBS - Nice game here... a little luster taken off from Temple going down in the Semis but the A-10 is undervalued this year...
  • Magic @ Suns - ABC 3:30 - Marcin Gortat vs. his old team! lol...
Enjoy the day, folks... it's Madness...

Congratulations to Connecticut on winning five games in five days! That really is a remarkable accomplishment, especially when you consider who they beat. Kemba Walker showed just how dominant he can be by destroying the Big East Tournament’s scoring record. Hopefully, they will get a respectable seed in the NCAA Tournament and their momentum will carry over in order to allow them to make a nice run.

Congratulations also to the Washington Huskies on winning the Pac-10 Tournament! That was an amazing conference championship game, capped by a fantastic shot by Isaiah Thomas!
