9/14: Baseball Coverage!

I joke with exclamation points... but we're going all baseball today (since nothing else happened last night)...
  • The Braves get a win... 7-1 behind two 3-run bombs from McCann and Uggla... Mike Minor was pretty good yet again (albeit inefficient/wild), and the McCann bomb felt like the kind that can send the squad into a good run...
  • Justin Verlander has 23 wins... and has won his last 11 starts... not decisions.. starts!... now, part of that is luck (i.e. run support/bullpen), but it's still impressive... the funny thing is, CC Sabathia has been about a quarter-tick worse, and yet NO one has anyone in the Cy Young conversation except Verlander...
  • Mo Rivera is better at his job than you are at yours... 600 saves... now, the save stat is an absurd one, and I mostly discount this record, but you can't ignore the peripherals on Rivera... career 2.22 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 55.8 WAR (as a reliever!)... basically, he's the best relief pitcher ever, but not because he has 600 saves...
  • Tim Wakefield has 200 wins... Tim... Wakefield... I guess that's what happens when you pitch until your mid-40s and spend the second half of your career on the Red Sox...
  • Speaking of the Sox, they won and Tampa lost on Tuesday... the sound you hear is a giant exhale from Boston... it's not over yet, but last night was huge for them...
Until later...
