11/10: Newton, Millsap, Gold Gloves, etc.

Greetings...
  • This Cam Newton story won't die... the term "witch hunt" certainly comes to mind for me, as alleged details seem to leak out daily from shady sources in the background, but that doesn't change the potential impact... the consensus best player in the country is being openly accused of "pay for play" tactics in recruitment in the middle of a 10-0 national title contending season... I'm all about giving him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise, and I think it's ludicrous to not vote for him for Heisman if the only reason stems from this allegation, but it's not going away...
  • Paul Millsap goes off... 46 points?! 3 triples in the final minute!?... In seeing the extended highlight (I was without NBA-TV sadly), it seemed fluke-ish that he was making everything late, especially the threes (his first 3pt fg makes this year), but you can't ignore 46... Paging Chris Bosh... Udonis Haslem... nothing?.... Anyway, Lebron goes for a triple-double, and Wade gets 39... and they lose at home?... I'm not sure how to react to that, but it was a crazy game...
  • The Pacers scored 54 points last night... in the 3rd quarter(!)... starting the quarter with 20 straight made FGs (and finishing 20-21 only due to a buzzer-beater attempt by McRoberts), and the highest scoring quarter in 20 years... Mike Dunleavy had 24 alone in the quarter, more than he'd scored in any game all season, and this further pushed the craziness level of the NBA night... Denver scored 113... and lost by 30+...
  • Free Kevin Love!... 23 points... 24 rebounds... against the World Champion Lakers who happen to sport the best frontcourt alive... but hey, congrats to Kurt Rambis on playing him 38 minutes last night... thanks for coming out
  • The AL Gold Gloves were given out yesterday... and Derek Jeter won at Shortstop... yes, this is clearly an abomination, as most consider him (and stats agree) to be a below-AVERAGE fielder at SS... much less a gold-glover.... That was the clear oversight of the day, but there were some more questionable outcomes (Brett Gardner not winning, Mark Ellis getting shafted again, etc.)... there always are, it's part of the game, and it's a known fact that player's bats influence this wrongly... but alas.... Congrats to Ichiro on 10 straight gold gloves though, and make no mistake, his are legit..
  • Colorado fired Dan Hawkins yesterday... 19-39 there won't cut it... but hey... maybe now he can coach intramurals...

What to watch for...

  • Bucks/Hawks - 7:00 SportSouth - Still without Marvin Williams this is an interesting matchup... I'm hoping Larry Drew will see the light and give Zaza more minutes than Collins (now that Dwight isn't opposing)... at any rate, a nice barometer...
  • Jazz/Magic - 7:00 ESPN - I think Orlando wins by 20...
  • Clippers/Spurs - 9:30 ESPN - Man, the Clips have alot of national TV games, eh?... Not exactly sure they'll be competitive on the road here, but you can watch Griffin (and Bledsoe) try...

Stay tuned later for the College Football preview...
