2010-11 College Basketball Preview

Here we are again... There's nothing wrong with more hoops!... I apologize for the delay on getting this up, but with the NBA and NFL in full effect, it snuck up on me... alas, I'll spare you the 300+ team breakdown, but here are a few thoughts/predictions on the season... enjoy!

CONFERENCE PREDICTIONS

ACC
Champ - Duke (not close)... Singler, Smith, Seth Curry, the Plumlees and Kyrie Irving.. wow...
Sleeper - North Carolina (duh)... Harrison Barnes looks like a stud and they have a ton of talent
POY - Kyle Singler, Duke

Atlantic 10
Champ - Temple... Lavoy Allen leads the most talented team... Xavier takes a step back
Sleeper - Richmond, Dayton
POY - Chris Wright, Dayton

Big East
Champ - Pittsburgh... Almost by default... 16-team conference and everyone has holes
Sleeper - Seton Hall... Better coach this year, and returning their top 4 players
POY - Corey Fisher, Villanova

Big 10
Champ - Michigan State... Best coach, elite player (Lucas), and crazy depth
Sleeper - Purdue... Even with the Hummel injury (again), they have Johnson and Etuan Moore...
POY - Demetri McCarney, Illinois

Big 12
Champ - Kansas... I'll take Bill Self over crazy Frank Martin (KSU)... that's what it comes down t
Sleeper - Colorado... Not sold on them, but they have great guard play, and that wins in college
POY - Jacob Pullen, Kansas State

Conference USA
Champ - Memphis... can't go against by far the most talented team...
Sleeper - UTEP... Almost pulled the trigger... Culpepper can really play
POY - Randy Culpepper, UTEP

Horizon
Champ - Butler... Lose Gordon Hayward, but this is still a top 10-12 team... loaded
Sleeper - Cleveland State
POY - Shelvin Mack, Butler

Missouri Valley
Champ - Wichita State.. 4 starters back from a legit team last year.. conference is loaded though
Sleeper - Northern Iowa, Creighton
POY - Toure Murry, Wichita State

Mountain West
Champ - BYU... Jimmer! That's all they need...
Sleeper - San Diego State (not really a sleeper) or UNLV
POY - Jimmer Fredette, BYU... Best non-major player in the country

Pac-10
Champ - Washington... Isaiah Thomas leads the best team in a "rebounding" league...
Sleeper - UCLA... don't sleep on Ben Howland... lots of talent coming back...
POY - Isaiah Thomas, Washington

SEC
East Champ - Florida.... Returns everyone, and I had Kentucky here, but Kanter's injury hurts
West Champ - Miss. State... Best of the worst in the West... the East is deep and good though
Sleeper - Georgia... Quietly very talented with Thompkins and Leslie...
POY - Scotty Hopson, Tennessee

WAC
Champ - Utah State... Always one of the most well-coached teams in the country...
Sleeper - Nevada... Usually more talented and that continues here...
POY - Tai Wesley, Utah State

WCC
Champ - Gonzaga... By far the most talented team, and have to pick them until proven otherwise
Sleeper - Portland, Loyola Marymount... Sneaky depth in the WCC this year...
POY - Elias Harris, Gonzaga

ALL-AMERICAN TEAMS

1st Team
G - Jacob Pullen, Kansas State
G - Jimmer Fredette, BYU
F - Kyle Singler, Duke
F - Elias Harris, Gonzaga
C - Jajuan Johnson, Purdue

2nd Team
G - Nolan Smith, Duke
G - Demetri McCarney, Illinois
F - Trey Thompkins, Georgia
F - Harrison Barnes, UNC
C - Marcus Morris, Kansas

3rd Team
G - Shelvin Mack, Butler
G - Kalin Lucas, Michigan State
F - E'twuan Moore, Purdue
F - Austin Freeman, Georgetown
C - Jon Leuer, Wisconsin

All-Freshman
G - Kyrie Irving, Duke
G - Brandon Knight, Kentucky
F - Harrison Barnes, UNC
F - Jared Sullinger, Ohio State
C - Perry Jones, Baylor

PREDICTIONS WITH NO CHANCE OF COMING TRUE...

Sweet 16 - Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Pitt, Villanova, Kansas State, Kansas, Florida, BYU, Gonzaga, Temple, Butler, Washington

Elite 8 - Duke, Michigan State, Pitt, Kansas, Gonzaga, Purdue, Florida, Butler

Final 4 - Duke, Michigan State, Pitt, Purdue

Champs - Duke over Michigan State... Duke is just scarily loaded... people keep forgetting about this, but they now have Seth Curry eligible (killer as a freshman averaging 20 a game at Liberty) to go along with top-5 recruit Kyrie Irving... and oh, they return National POY favorite Kyle Singler, all-american guard Nolan Smith and both Plumlee brothers... it's not even fair... so of course, they won't win it...

Anyway... Enjoy college basketball... I always do..

Kalin Lucas, third team All-American? Not POY? Ouch!
