11/9: Steelers Rolling, Hawks/Magic, etc.

Aloha.. semi-abbreviated today...
  • Pittsburgh 27, Cincy 21 - A fairly ho-hum road win for Pittsburgh... they tried to let Cincy back in the game with a missed field goal with 4 minutes to go, but Carson Palmer and company couldn't make enough plays late... Mendenhall looked very sharp, Mike Wallace is a big-play guy, and their defense effectively bottled up Benson (3 ypc).. For Cincy? Bad O-line, Ochocinco just chewing out Palmer on the field (lol), and they just aren't very good... but on the bright side? T.O. is playing out of his mind... seems shocking that that could be under-reported but I think it has been...
  • Magic win by 4... I probably can't speak about this rationally... but here are a few off-beat thoughts... Al Horford can't play 28 minutes in a game... 28 minutes? That's 7th man stuff.... he's the best player on the team and I'm (already) sick of Larry Drew burying him for entire halves with 2 fouls... see what SVG did when Howard got 2? Took him out for a while, but still managed to get him 34 minutes even though he ended with FIVE fouls... Also, I absolutely do not understand Jason Collins playing more than Zaza Pachulia... Pachulia is the better player... and I don't think it's close... and I know I've said this 100 times, but Rick Sund's decision to carry 4 centers (2 of which are worthless) instead of carrying a backup SF is indefensible... were there positives? Yes, I think so... there was no sense of "we can't win this game" like was felt in the playoffs last year, and the Hawks kept making runs... I'll put a small asterisk by it b/c of the Nelson and Marvin injuries, but there's a bit of encouragement, esp. with that game being on the road....
  • Box Score Check - Zach Randolph threw up a 23 and 20 last night... get 'em Z-Bo... Dallas takes out Boston behind Dirk's 25... Rondo missed a late 3 (because there was no one within 8 feet of him), and Dallas held on... Steph Curry had 34, 5 and 4 in GS's road win in Toronto... Break up the W's?... 5-2 now and it makes you wonder what could've happened last year if Don Nelson hadn't died in 2005...
  • ESPN is breaking up the Jon Miller/Joe Morgan announcing team from Sunday Night Baseball... both guys have contracts that are expiring, and ESPN is letting Morgan go, and waiting on word from Miller on a changed role... 1) I think Jon Miller is the non-Vin Scully voice of baseball right now... he's fantastic at his job, and I wish they'd keep him... and 2) Joe Morgan is a caricature... and he's been bad for years to the point where if Tim McCarver didn't exist, he'd get buried alot more...
  • There was college basketball last night... weird... Tennessee got the doors blown off them by 15 by Indianapolis... not "Indiana", but "Indianapolis"... there's always a few of these, but it doesn't make it less funny...
What to watch for...
  • Jazz/Heat - 7:30 NBA-TV - Interesting test for Utah here... there's some serious roster construction question marks there, and I'm not sure they can handle LBJ and Wade on the wing (actually I'm convinced they can't), but if there was ever a game to get Al Jefferson going...
  • 30 for 30 - Marcus Dupree - 8:00 ESPN - This should be a good one... the much ballyhooed high school running back with the absurd highlight reel.. and I believe this is of the 2 hour variety...
  • World Series of Poker Final Table - 10:00 ESPN - You could hear me rant on the lack of actual poker they show on these things... but there's still interest b/c of the stakes...
Until next time...
