11/5: Cam Newton, Sparky Anderson, etc.

Greetings all...
  • Cam Newton is in the news... there is a report that an alleged "advisor" to Newton solicited Mississippi State for $200,000 to get Newton to sign there... casting a giant cloud over the circumstance of his recruitment and subsequent commitment to Auburn... Auburn is steadfastly saying that's he's eligible... and apparently they've known about this for a while, so in their defense, they seem... sure?... But at this point, there's no point in pulling him from the lineup when they'll be forfeiting every game if it's true anyway....
  • RIP Sparky Anderson.. the 3-time World series winning HOF manager died yesterday... 2 titles in Cincy, 1 in Detroit... and I have a fondness for him as I grew up with Tigers ties (Dad is/was a Tiger fan) and followed them closely in my childhood... everyone was glowing about him, perhaps most by Bobby Cox who was visibly shaken by the news it seemed...
  • Virginia Tech keeps moving... Despite GT jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead, the Hokies took care of business behind a kickoff return TD, and balanced offense from Tyrod Taylor and company... the Yellow Jackets suffered a blow when Joshua Nesbitt went down and couldn't return, but their ineptitude in the passing game (2 of 10 with 2 INTs) ultimately did them in...
  • NBA Box Score Check - Portland and OKC played a helluva game last night... OKC won the glass 47 to 38 (bit of a surprise), and were able to overpower Portland late... Durant and Westbrook each had 28 and 11, but the x-factor for OKC (to me) was Serge Ibaka off the bench... 4 of 4 shooting for 11 points, 7 boards, and 2 blocks while slowing Aldridge more than anyone else could... for Portland?... Their top 6 were all in double-figures, but Miller and Roy combined for 13 of 35 shooting... that's ugly... one thing to watch going forward was that all 5 starters played 35+ minutes and the highest minute total off the bench was 19... NY/Chicago... 16 of 24 threes for the Knicks... that's all you really need to see lol... Toney Douglas exploded for 30 points on 9 of 14 shooting with 5 threes... Ray Felton had 20 and 10 on 4 threes, and Gallinari woke up a bit too with 4-4 threes... for Chicago, Rose was fantastic (24 and 14), but they got below average production from Deng (5 of 13), for some reason went 11-deep in the game (huh?), and wasted an 18 and 10 from Taj Gibson....
  • I already tweeted this... but is David Ortiz serious? He was reportedly upset that Boston picked up his 1-year, 12.5 million dollar option... Do you think he realizes that he wouldn't get 75% of that amount from anyone else in the league?... Or that he's 35 years, can't hit lefties, and is basically a platoon DH?...
What to watch for...
  • Bulls @ Celtics - 8:00 ESPN - Back-to-back for the Bulls... going on the road against a better team... would be impressed if they hung around all night...
  • Hawks @ T-Wolves - 8:00 SportSouth - No Marvin, No Evans, Jamal game-time decision... I assume that means Smith at the 3 (always a pleasure), and the biggest workload for Mr. Jordan Crawford in his young career... yes, Minnesota is God-awful, but this is a rough spot without a small forward on the entire active roster... on the bright side? Beasley starting at the 3 for Minnesota and he's... not a small forward either
  • Clippers @ Nuggets - 10:30 ESPN - Blake Griffin! The Clips are bad... but he's watchable, and I want to see the Gordon vs. Afflalo matchup.. I think I have a problem...
  • College Football - UCF @ Houston - 8:00 ESPN2 - If for some reason you like football this much...
Make sure you check out the College Football Preview... and the NFL Preview is on the way shortly... enjoy!
