12/10: College Coaching, B-Roy, etc.

Greetings all... couple things today... led by sad news from Portland...
  • Brandon Roy is retiring... an elite 2-guard at his peak, Roy has been shackled with knee injuries the last couple of years, and was advised by doctors to shut it down for good... reportedly, he was even told that he'd have issues walking if he continued to play... really sad for him...
  • Speaking of Portland, Greg Oden goes down again... reportedly a set back in Oden's rehab that may cost him the entire 2011-12 season... I have a soft spot for Oden despite his Ohio State background, and I'm really rooting for him... so brutal...
  • Texas A&M to hire Kevin Sumlin.... various outlets reporting this one as the former Houston Cougar head coach moves up in the world here... I like it for A&M because they seem to acquire talent, but consistency has been an issue, and Sumlin is a hot commodity...
  • Another coaching move... UCLA is hiring... Jim Mora?!?.... speaking as a Falcons fan, I think this is probably an okay move... always thought Mora would be a better college coach because he seemed to be a "players" guy who was pretty laid back... and he can't be worse than Neuheisel was...
  • Update on the Chris Paul nonsense... apparently, there can be further negotiations, but my question is, why would Dell Demps even try at this point? Can you IMAGINE how furious he must be?....

NBA player movement...

  • David West to the Celtics?... it's reportedly "close" but no one knows how... curious?... I have no idea, but that'd be a really nice addition for the C's to take some pressure off Garnett and that knee...
  • Speaking of the C's... they sign-n-traded Glen Davis to the Magic for Brandon Bass... kind of a weird move, but if Boston didn't want to re-up Davis, that's a decent enough return... when combined with a David West move? Then I don't get it...
  • Orlando amnesties Gilbert Arenas... seemed to be so terribly obvious... so I won't even touch it from the Orlando side, but they are desperately hoping there is a bidding war for him on the auction front... I'm riveted to see how these auctions end up happening...
  • Remember when I said it looked like the Hawks were in on Earl Watson?... oops... he re-ups in Utah... but HEY! The Hawks signed Vladimir Radmanovic... who I hate... good times!
  • And finally... Marcus Thornton signs on to stay in Sacramento for 5 years, $40 million... seems like a violent overpay for a guy with one discernible skill, but I'm usually against overpaying undersized 2 guards who don't do anything (paging Ben Gordon)...

Elsewhere...

  • The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired Trevor Cahill and Craig Breslow from the A's for some high end prospects including Jarrod Parker and Colin Cowgill... interesting move for Arizona, in that it signals that they're going for it now after a nice 2011 season... typical Oakland move... save money... get younger...

What to watch for on Saturday...

  • Ohio State @ Kansas - ESPN 3:15 - Definitely the game of the day, and a chance to see Thomas Robinson and Jared Sullinger square off in a battle of the 2 best college big men...
  • Kentucky @ Indiana - ESPN 5:15 - Old school here... nice to see Indiana "back" at 8-0, but they haven't a played a soul yet, and we'll see what they are after today...
  • Washington @ Duke - CBS Noon - Washington's had a tough time early, but that's a real team still, and a nice home test for Duke...
  • Long Beach St. @ UNC - ESPN3 7:00 - Not on "TV" I know, but man, Long Beach has played an insane schedule... worth watching to see Casper Ware and Kendall Marshall match up...
  • OK State @ Pittsburgh - ESPN2 2:30 - Quietly good game here... just won't be flashy...
  • Michigan State @ Gonzaga - ESPN2 9:00 - Awesome... night game in the kennel and Izzo will have Sparty ready...

Enjoy...
