12/17: What is news?

Greetings all... there was little to nothing that has to do with actual sporting events last night... you'll see...
  • The Penn State situation gets crazier... there is now testimony from the grad assistant about illicit sexual activity for Sandusky... the former AD and President could face perjury charges... I'm so sick of this... the only redeeming factor at this point is justice for the kids... that is the list...
  • Barry Bonds avoids jail... somehow after 9 years, and what I perceive as blatant perjury, Bonds avoids prison... no idea how because I (like everyone else I know) quit following this years ago...
  • Kobe's wife files for divorce... I have only one question... would this be as big a story without what happened in Colorado and the multi-million dollar ring?...

Okay... to actual sports...

  • Erik Spoelstra gets a contract extension... curious timing, eh?... the Heat head man did take his team to the finals last year, but by extending him here, they don't really have a parachute if they start slow...
  • Michael Cuddyer to the Rockies... 3 years, $30 million is an awful lot for a guy with little to no defensive impact playing outfield in the cavernous NL west... he does have position flexibility though... think Martin Prado with less infield glove and more power...
  • There were 4 NBA preseason games last night... #1 pick Kyrie Irving is getting the majority of the headlines after his 21 point in 27 minute debut... but he shot 4-14 and took a hilarious 15 free throws in 27 minutes... hmm... also of note, the Hornets took on the Grizzlies (and won) while holding Gordon/Kaman/Aminu out... it's early, folks...
  • Other NBA notes: Richard Jefferson is staying a Spur... the amnesty deadline has passed and he, despite being on the outs by many reports, is still a Spur... it didn't really make any sense to me why they'd cut him and pay him while he's still a capable player and they don't have another great option... speaking of amnesty, Baron Davis clears waivers... this could be a very, very interesting situation... BD is now free to sign wherever he likes and Miami, New York, and the Lakers spring to mind... all have point guard needs (desperate ones in LA and New York, and Miami is Miami) and between Baron and Gilbert Arenas, I have to think they both land in big spots... and finally, there are still several marquee-ish free agents left... pretty crazy considering preseason has already begun by Afflalo, Dalembert, Kirilenko, Stuckey, and Kris Humphries all need work...

What to watch for...

NFL

  • Cowboys @ Bucs - 8:20 NFL Network - I broke this one down in the NFL preview... check it out...

Hoops

  • Syracuse @ NC State - 6:30 ESPN2 - The number 1 team in the land on the road against a major conference foe...
  • Memphis @ Louisville - 4:00 CBS - Memphis has way too much talent to have 3 losses already...
  • Baylor @ BYU - 2:00 - This game isn't on TV in Atlanta, but I had to mention it just because BYU is a 2.5 point favorite in Vegas... Baylor is the #6 team in the country... BYU is unranked... process that...
  • Notre Dame @ Indiana - 4:30 ESPN2 - The Hoosiers are still unbeaten... worth watching for Cody Zeller...

Bowls

  • New Mexico Bowl - Temple vs. Wyoming - 2:00 ESPN - If you really like football...
  • Famous Idaho Potato Bowl - Ohio vs. Utah St. - 5:30 ESPN - Or if you like to gamble...
  • New Orleans Bowl - San Diego St. vs. LA-Lafayette - 9:00 ESPN - I have no idea...

Enjoy..
