12/10 Part 2: NFL Preview, Ryan Braun, etc.

Greetings all... Writing this on Saturday night, so please forgive me if something breaks in the wee hours... let's get to it...

EDIT: I forgot the Heisman ceremony was about to happen when I posted this... Congrats to Robert Griffin III... very deserving, and I wouldn't have had any issue with anyone except Mathieu (can't get suspended for a game, and he isn't the best DB in that backfield)... I would've gone with Ball... but I'm nitpicking...
  • Ryan Braun tests positive for PEDs... this was reported by ESPN, and it has been stated that Braun is appealing, but WOW... the current NL MVP facing a 50-game suspension for steroids? That's a pretty crazy story... I don't really have any thoughts on the steroid controversy in general... if he did it? Suspend him...
  • College Hoops... Kentucky goes down in a heap thanks to a game-winning buzzer beater by Indiana's Christian Watford... he finished the night with 20, but none bigger than the dagger... this is obviously a big-time upset, but Tom Crean is a legit head coach, and finally has some talent at Indiana to turn it around... no "shock" here for me... Kansas knocks off Ohio State thanks in part to Jared Sullinger's absence with back spasms... Thomas Robinson led the way with 21 and 7 for the Jayhawks... and Duke edges Washington 86-80 despite nearly blowing a big lead late... Washington scored 54 in the second half (yikes) and were led by their backcourt of Wroten/Wilcox/Gaddy who each had 16+ points...
  • The Hornets/Lakers/Rockets deal is apparently re-submitted to the NBA... it's unclear what the changes are, but here we go again...
  • The Pistons are buying out Richard Hamilton... hard to see how he could be brought back after leading the coach revolt last year, and he's clearly done being a Piston... that said, he'd be intriguing on the right team (Chicago?)...
  • The Magic (according to Yahoo!) seem to have locked up Jason Richardson after amnestying Gilbert Arenas... the deal for J-Rich is said to be 4 years and $25 million... that's probably a fair price for him (good deal early, bad deal later in years, as usual)... and they seem to be going after some "win-now" pieces...

What to watch for... (extended for NFL preview)....

  • Falcons @ Panthers - 1:00 FOX - The Cam Newton traveling road show is in Charlotte... this is a virtual must-win for the Falcons (as every game is now except that Saints game) and they need it... the only way Carolina can compete here is in a shootout and with the Falcons missing DBs again, it could be dicey... still like the birds...
  • Texans @ Bengals - 1:00 CBS - Nice game here... TJ Yates looked average (that's a compliment) in his debut, and Cincy is without Leon Hall... that being said, I like the Bengals at home... just not enough explosiveness for Houston without Johnson, and Cincy can stop the run...
  • Saints @ Titans - 1:00 FOX - Quietly big game... did you know that Tennessee was 7-5 and in position to make a wild card run?... They are... and if they win here at home, they're in great shape... New Orleans is better, but that's an average team on the road...
  • Chiefs @ Jets - 1:00 CBS - Must-win for the Jets...
  • Bears @ Broncos - 4:00 FOX - I've already buried the Caleb Hanie-led Bears... and without Forte? Good luck... but hey... Tim Tebow is playing..
  • Raiders @ Packers - 4:15 CBS - Green Bay may have won their "tight game" last week... they should cruise by the Raiders at home... Carson Palmer on the road, everybody!...
  • Giants @ Cowboys - 8:20 NBC - Winner wins the NFC East IMO... and that's a sad tale when the teams are a combined 13-11... I like the Cowboys at home...

Enjoy...
