12/20: Yu!

Greetings all..
  • As you may gather from my headline, Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish has been posted and the Rangers bid a record $51.7 million to win the auction for the right to NEGOTIATE with him... no, the Rangers haven't signed him... no, they don't HAVE to sign him... but for $52 million? They'd better sign him... Various scouting reports range from "best Japanese pitching prospect ever" to "the next Kei Igawa"... we really have no idea... but good luck to Rangers fans (that's you Nick)...
  • San Fran 20, Pittsburgh 3 - This one surprised me... especially after laying 2 stinkers in the past couple weeks, the Niners showing up and routing Pittsburgh is important... that defense was opportunistic, with 4 takeaways including 3 INTs, and Alex Smith did just enough without making any mistakes... what a weird game though with the power outages, etc...
  • College Hoops upsets... Kansas goes down in a heap to Davidson... this wasn't a true home game for Kansas (played in KC) but they allowed 11 triples, and couldn't win even with Thomas Robinson throwing up a man-like 21 and 18... Marquette falls from the ranks of the unbeaten... 67-59 road loss to a pretty bad LSU team... Marquette shot 36%, LSU shot 54%... that's all you need to see...
  • Peja Stojakovic retires after 13 years... people forget just how dynamic he was in Sacramento before he lost his legs even averaging 24 points a game with a 48/43/93 slash line in 2004... that's ridiculous stuff... anyway, he had offers to stay in the league, but neck trouble (and the fact he won a ring last year) was enough to call it quits...
  • Other NBA stuff... Arron Afflalo to the Nuggets... 5 years, 43 million for the #1 swingman on the market, and that's a little less than I thought he'd get honestly... big fan of Afflalo because he doesn't do anything poorly, and he's a nice fit back in Denver now that JR Smith is stuck in China... The Hawks sign Jannero Pargo for the minimum... what a weird move... 32 year old combo guard who's a career 38% field goal shooter... but when your bench options (until Hinrich gets back) are Pape Sy and 2 free agent rookies? Gotta do something... Nick Young re-signs with Washington for the 1-year qualifying offer.. kind of a curious move unless the market really wasn't there for him... I don't hate Young, but he's a totally one-dimensional player (shooting/scoring)... he's good at that one thing, but the fit has to be right... Antonio McDyess retires after the Spurs waive him... I'd be SHOCKED if he didn't sign with a contender later in the year... just a gut feeling...

What to watch for on Tuesday...

  • Hoops - College of Charleston @ Louisville - ESPNU 9:00 - Really nice game here... Charleston is 9-1 with the only loss to a nice UCF team, and Trent Wiedeman is worth the price of admission...
  • Beef 'O Brady's Bowl - Florida Int'l vs. Marshall - ESPN 8:00 - Unless youre in a bowl picks pool (cough, me) no one cares...

Enjoy... and stay tuned for the NBA previews that will pop up shortly...

All I want for Christmas is YU!

Just for the record, if we don't sign him we get the 51.7 m back, so no loss there. There is no pressure to sign him, just the opportunity. Let me just say he blows the stats of Irabu and Dice K out of the water, so even if makes a good No.2 or 3 we needed him.
I am in favor of spending Nolan's friends money.

Still don't think we will the west.
