10/7: CFB Preview, MLB Stuff, etc....

Hello... combined the college football preview in with other stuff this week due to lack of big-time matchups... forgive me...

Baseball first...
  • Roy Halladay... what do you even say?... The likely NL Cy Young winner decided to twirl the 2nd ever playoff no-no last night... against a good offense in a bandbox stadium no less... and he did it with really only one hard-hit ball (a nice sliding catch by Jayson Werth)... dominant from the jump... and it only adds to Philly's mystique as the huge favorite in the NL...
  • And you thought Cliff Lee was great! He was, in fact, in shutting down the Rays bats, and outlasting AL cy young candidate David Price... the Rangers were sitting dead-red on Price's fastball and got a few big-time opportunities (most inexplicably throwing Jeff Franceour a hittable fastball...) to do damage... I have no real read on this series, but Tampa needs a better effort from James Shields (he's been dreadful lately) to get on to Texas with a split...
  • Yankees/Twins... Same old story... Yankees get big hits... Mariano locks it down... NYY absolutely owns the Twins... it's getting comical... especially when they're getting staked 4 run leads with Liriano on the mound and they still can't get a win...
CFB...
  • Alabama @ South Carolina - 3:30 CBS - Can't pick against Alabama... just can't do it... but this a nice road test... SC has touted RB Marcus Lattimore who's shown himself capable of game-breaking ability, but I'll take the Alabama skill guys over anyone's in the country, and that defense is flying around...
  • LSU @ Florida - 7:30 ESPN - Les Miles is a clown... it's been comical listening to his incoherent rambling this week in the wake of the disaster that was that Tennessee/LSU game... basically, if you think I'm picking LSU... you're insane
  • Florida State @ Miami - 8:00 ABC - This game sounds better than it is... but it's still 2 ranked teams with something to play for... Miami got a big road win last week @ Clemson and despite Jacory Harris's uncanny knack for throwing soul-crushing INTs, they are in play in the ACC... I like FSU in the game because I trust Christian Ponder... even on the road...
  • Michigan State @ Michigan - 3:30 ABC/ESPN - Denard Robinson is the most electrifying player in Ann Arbor since Charles Woodson... and maybe before that... read that again... anyway, the Michigan defense has been a certified grease fire through 5 games, and that'll likely continue, but there's been a pile-on following the Indiana game... that ignores one thing... Indiana has the best passing game in the Big 10... yes, they're terrible everywhere else... but they can wing it, and Michigan can't stop the pass... this is a more conventional attack in MSU with a competent QB, but a team that runs alot of I-formation and isn't explosive... I like Michigan in a high-scoring shootout... provided Denard can stay on the field... ::knocks on various wood-like surfaces::
THE PICKS! (14-12 entering)
  • Central Michigan +21.5 over Va Tech - They won't win... but that's a decent opponent, and I don't ever trust VT laying 3 touchdowns...
  • Penn State - 8 over Illinois - Illinois is terrible... Ron Zook is as good as fired... and the frosh QB from PSU plays well at home
  • Florida -6.5 over LSU - Reasons listed above...
Okay that's done.. now what to watch for on Thursday...
  • Braves/Giants - Lowe/Lincecum - 9:37 on TBS - Story time... I saw a man driving on I-85 in Atlanta this morning doing the tomahawk chop out his window... it's about that time folks... I have a clear memory of red tomahawks lining the streets of Atlanta in 1991 and 1992... it's not there... but I'm fired up... I hope Derek Lowe is too...
  • Nebraska @ Kansas State - 7:30 ESPN - If you don't like baseball...
  • Rangers/Rays - Wilson/Shields - 2:37 on TBS - Must win for Tampa...
  • Yankees/Twins - Pettitte/Pavano - 6:07 on TBS - Must win for Minny...
Enjoy the action...
